More Than Riding Lessons

At MeadowView Reins, we believe learning to ride is about far more than what happens in the saddle.

Our Riding Academy is a progressive horsemanship program designed to help riders build confidence, develop real skills, understand their horses and grow into capable, thoughtful horse people.

Instead of simply attending lesson after lesson, Academy riders have a clear path forward — with goals to work toward and achievements to celebrate along the way.

A Journey That Grows Confidence, Skills & Partnership

Every rider’s journey looks different.

Some riders dream of competing. Some want to confidently head out on the trail. Some want to understand horses inside and out. And some simply want to spend time with an animal they love while building confidence along the way.

Our Rider Progression System gives each of them somewhere to grow.

Riders progress through six levels:

Within every level, riders work through three stages:

Each stage includes skills and challenges designed to gradually develop the rider’s knowledge, independence and ability.

Riders progress when they’re ready — not simply because they’ve attended a certain number of lessons.

How Riding Academy Works

Riding Academy combines regular mounted instruction with the horsemanship knowledge riders need to become truly capable around horses.

During their time in the Academy, riders work toward skills appropriate to their individual level.

That may include developing:

  • Safe horse handling and barn skills
  • Grooming and tacking
  • Balance, position and effective riding
  • Walk, trot and eventually canter/lope skills
  • Steering and independent control
  • Trail and ranch riding skills
  • Understanding horse behaviour and communication
  • Horse care and management
  • Confidence and problem-solving
  • Responsibility and leadership
  • A deeper partnership with the horse

As riders become more experienced, we expect more than simply being able to perform a riding skill.

We want them to understand what they’re doing, why they’re doing it, and what their horse is communicating back to them.

Horsemanship Challenges & Leather Badges

Because Good Riders Should Also Be Good Horse People

Some of the most important lessons we teach happen outside the saddle.

Academy riders participate in unmounted horsemanship challenges that build practical knowledge and hands-on skills.

Challenges may include areas such as grooming, tack, horse care, safety, feeding, horse behaviour, first aid and other aspects of everyday horsemanship.

As riders complete challenges, they’ll have opportunities to earn leather horsemanship badges recognizing what they’ve learned.

These aren’t participation prizes.

The goal isn’t simply to collect badges — it’s to earn the knowledge and skills they represent.

Learning at Your Own Pace

Horseback riding isn’t a race.

Some skills click almost immediately. Others take dozens of rides to truly master. Confidence can develop quickly in one area and take considerably longer in another.

That’s normal.

Our Bronze, Silver and Gold progression gives riders achievable milestones without putting pressure on them to move through the program on an arbitrary timeline.

Coaches assess riders based on demonstrated skills, knowledge, confidence and independence.

When they’ve mastered the requirements of one stage, they’re ready to work toward the next.

Riding Academy Groups

Riding Academy is offered in small groups so riders receive meaningful instruction while also benefiting from learning alongside other riders.

Rather than grouping riders strictly by age, we consider:

Age • Experience • Riding Ability • Confidence • Horse Compatibility

This allows us to create groups where riders can safely learn, challenge themselves and encourage one another.

Academy options are available for children, youth, teens and adults, including riders starting from the very beginning.

You do not need to own a horse to participate.

What Makes Riding Academy Different?

There are plenty of places where you can take a horseback riding lesson.

Our goal is bigger than that.

We want to develop riders who can walk into a barn and know what they’re doing. Riders who notice when something isn’t right. Riders who understand that horses aren’t equipment. Riders who can adjust when the horse underneath them needs something different.

We want riders who become increasingly safe, capable, compassionate and independent.

That takes more than saddle time.

🐴 It takes horsemanship.

Our Horses Are Teachers Too

One of the greatest advantages of learning at a riding school is the opportunity to ride and work with different horses.

Every horse has something different to teach.

Some require more leg. Some require quieter hands. Some build confidence. Others challenge riders to become clearer, softer or more patient.

As riders progress through the Academy, they’ll have opportunities to develop relationships with different members of our herd and learn how good horsemanship adapts to the individual horse.

Our goal isn’t to teach riders how to ride one horse.

It’s to teach them how to become horse people.

Private Family Riding Academy

Learn Together

Can’t make one of our regularly scheduled Academy groups work for your family?

Families may also be able to participate in Riding Academy through a private family group.

This can be a great option for siblings or family members who want to learn together while following the same Rider Progression System as our regular Academy groups.

Private Family Academy riders can work toward their Bronze, Silver and Gold achievements, participate in horsemanship challenges and earn leather badges while receiving instruction tailored to their family group.

Availability depends on rider compatibility, scheduling and horse availability.

Contact us to discuss Private Family Riding Academy options.

Not every rider needs the same kind of program.

Riding Academy is best suited to riders looking for consistent instruction and a structured pathway. Riders work through our progression system, complete horsemanship challenges and become part of an ongoing learning program.

Private and semi-private lessons offer greater scheduling flexibility and individualized instruction without requiring ongoing participation in the Academy program.

Private lessons can also be a great addition for Academy riders who want extra saddle time or focused coaching on a particular skill.

Riding Academy may be a great fit for someone who:

  • Loves horses and wants to learn more than simply how to ride
  • Wants to ride regularly
  • Enjoys having goals to work toward
  • Wants to build confidence and independence
  • Is interested in horse care and horsemanship
  • Enjoys learning alongside other riders
  • Wants to develop a genuine partnership with horses

And no — you don’t need to be an experienced rider.

Beginners are welcome.

The whole point of the Academy is having somewhere to start and somewhere to grow.

For mounted Riding Academy sessions, riders should come prepared with:

  • Long pants suitable for riding
  • Boots with a defined heel
  • An ASTM-approved equestrian helmet

Loaner helmets are available for riders who do not yet have their own.

Additional clothing or equipment requirements may vary depending on the season and planned activities.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Riders with previous experience can be assessed and placed at the appropriate point in our progression system.

There is no fixed timeline. Progression is based on demonstrated skills, knowledge and independence rather than attendance alone.

Gold represents completion of that level. Once the required skills have been demonstrated, the rider begins working toward Bronze at the next level.

No. Our Rider Progression System is designed to provide meaningful goals for youth and adult riders.

No. MeadowView Reins horses are used for Academy sessions.

Absolutely not.

Riders may eventually choose competition, trail riding, ranch riding or another discipline — or they may simply want to become confident recreational riders.

Our focus is developing strong foundational riding and horsemanship skills that riders can carry wherever their journey takes them.

Potentially, yes. Depending on age, ability and horse availability, siblings may participate in the same Academy group or families can contact us about Private Family Riding Academy options.

Absolutely. Private lessons are a great option when a rider wants additional saddle time or focused coaching.

Both programs help riders become knowledgeable, capable horse people, but they have different structures and goals.

Riding Academy is MeadowView Reins’ ongoing riding and horsemanship program. Riders follow our Rider Progression System, moving through Little Riders, Beginner Rider, Ranch Rider, Horse Partner, Trail Boss and Performance Rider, with Bronze, Silver and Gold achievements within each level. Academy sessions place a strong emphasis on regular riding, while also developing practical horsemanship through challenges and leather badges.

Canadian Pony Club is a nationally recognized equestrian education program with its own curriculum, achievement badges, testing and certification levels. Pony Club includes a significant horse-management and educational component alongside mounted skills and gives members opportunities to participate in Pony Club activities beyond MeadowView Reins.

Riders don’t have to choose one or the other. Riding Academy can be your rider’s regular weekly lesson program, while Pony Club can provide an additional layer of equestrian education, achievement and community.

Some riders may participate in Riding Academy only, some may choose Pony Club, and others may enjoy both.

Ready to Join the Riding Academy?

Whether your rider is climbing into the saddle for the first time or already has years of experience, there’s always another skill to learn, another challenge to tackle and another level of partnership to discover.

We aren’t interested in rushing riders through levels.

We’re interested in building confident, capable horse people.
